befitting our status as lords

BACK SEAT

PASSENGER
In the back seat
of the automobile
the air is thick and
sticky; the windows
are stuck closed
and the miles drift by
as slow as a Sunday
drive; most days I
enjoy the journey
but today, I’m just
waiting to arrive.

and then yellow and it
will wash over me
and the night will arrive.

so she would remember me;

and all was well until
the winds of time
raged against the tree,
and tore its limbs until it fell.

THE WORD ASTRAY

Sometimes, even a single word
That falls from our lips astray,
Becomes the seed that breaks
The rock apart, and cracks a smile
Across the cheerless heart.

GEM

Almost forgot the words today
Hardly remembered what to say
Couldn’t think if I had hidden
Anything of worth away.
